The Municipality actively contributes to the preservation of the historical heritage of all the historical periods of the old city, the promotion of its cultural personality, its tourist development, the upgrade of the quality of life of its inhabitants and the proper development of socio-economic activities. The Venetian Castle of Fortezza is located at the center of the old town (since it is at the edge of the sea) of Rethymnon. It has a long history dating back to antiquity, where it is considered to have been the islet that over the centuries was united with the mainland, until the completion of the fortress by the Venetians in 1580. Fortezza is the most important monument of Rethymnon and one of the most important of Crete but also of Greece, not only for the archeological interest it presents (Fortezza is famous as the largest Venetian castle built by the Venetians), but also for its unique beauty as a construction, the panoramic view from upon it and finally its visibility from every corner of the city.
Fortezza is also known for its cultural activity: Festivals, Concerts and Theatrical Performances from all over Greece choose Fortezza as one of the must to be stages of their tours during the summer. Every year, the Municipality of Rethymnon produces and promotes cultural events there as do artists who are active in Rethymnon and throughout Crete seek to perform in this imposing but at the same time beautiful castle.
Mikrasiaton Square is located in the heart of the historical center of the city of Rethymnon and it is perhaps the most famous one in the city. It is surrounded by remarkable monuments and cultural centers such as the Nerantzes Mosque, the Folklore Museum, the House of Culture and the Archaeological Museum. The Square is named after the refugees who were hosted there after the Asia Minor Tragedy and the exchange of populations under the Treaty of Lausanne. Today, it is one of the most remarkable spots in the city, not only because of its history and the important buildings that surround it, but also because it is a meeting place for young people, families, and travelers from all over the world which defines it as a multicultural point. Over recent years, cultural activities, festivals, theatrical performances and concerts are being hosted to this beloved to the residents and visitors square, giving it an exceptional quality.
