Percussion through time

Percussion instruments belong to the largest family in the world of music and some of them are considered to be the first musical instruments to be used by man. Thus, their story goes side by side with the history of human existence.

The earliest “specimens” of percussion have been found on Egyptian vessels and are dated back to 5000-4000 BC. In ancient Greece they were used as the main instruments in Dionysian celebrations and ceremonies. Among them the most common were the harpsichord or rattlesnake, the cymbal, the drum as well as various seists and bells.

The percussions appear in a symphony orchestra in the 15th century in Central Asia. In the 18th century, the Europeans with the Turks constant contact resulted to their introduction to Europe. They were used by classical composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, but also representatives of contemporary classical music such as Messiaen, Britten, Liqeti and Stravinsky in such ways they made the most of their unlimited potential. The first musical work for percussion ensemble, which is considered to be the stepping stone it was Edgard Varese’s Lonisation, written in 1931 for 13 percussionists and 39 percussion instruments.

Every summer, for three days, Rethymnon International Percussion Festival will be bringing to the public the magic of percussion with authentic music from all over the world in an intercultural encounter that will combine interaction of different cultures and entertainment.
